Plan the slot location, protect printed content and embedded technology, and select an appropriate badge attachment method before production.
Slot-Punch Placement, Durability, and RFID Safety
Slot punching allows an ID badge to attach directly to a clip, lanyard, or badge reel. However, punching removes material near the card edge and can affect the badge design, durability, printing process, attachment compatibility, and embedded technology.
Determine whether and where the badge will be slot-punched before approving the design or producing the complete badge order.

Decide Whether the Badge Should Be Slot-Punched
An ID badge does not have to be slot-punched. The appropriate approach depends on how the badge will be worn, handled, displayed, and used.
A slot-punched badge may be appropriate when the badge will attach directly to a compatible clip, lanyard, or badge reel. Direct attachment can reduce the need for a separate badge holder, but the slot becomes a stress point whenever the badge is pulled, twisted, or repeatedly extended on a reel.
Consider using a protective badge holder or another attachment method when:
- The card manufacturer has not approved a safe punch location.
- The badge contains RFID or other embedded technology.
- The badge will experience frequent pulling, twisting, or demanding use.
- Required printed information occupies the proposed slot area.
- Preserving the physical card without removing material is important.
- The intended attachment does not fit or hang correctly through the proposed slot.
The attachment method should be selected before the slot location and badge design are approved.
Confirm Badge Orientation and Attachment Method
Confirm whether the badge will be worn in portrait or landscape orientation. Identify the top edge of both the front and back so the slot, artwork, and backside content align with the way the badge will be displayed.
Also identify the intended attachment:
- Strap clip
- Lanyard clip or hook
- Badge reel
- Combination attachment
- Protective badge holder
- Other approved accessory
The attachment itself may cover more space than the slot opening. Allow sufficient clearance so the clip, strap, hook, or reel does not obscure the photograph, name, logo, barcode, QR code, instructions, or other important information.
If possible, provide an example of the intended attachment for physical testing.
Use the Approved Slot Guide
A typical slot opening is approximately 0.55″ to 0.625″ wide and 0.15″ high. These measurements are general planning references—not approved production specifications.
The actual slot dimensions and location may vary according to:
- Slot-punch equipment
- Portrait or landscape orientation
- Attachment hardware
- Card construction and thickness
- Lamination
- Magnetic stripes or contact chips
- RFID antennas and embedded components
- Manufacturer-designated punch locations
Use the slot guide approved for the project. Do not assume that the slot is centered or that measurements from a different punch, template, card product, or previous project will apply.
Protect Frontside and Backside Content
Add a nonprinting slot placeholder to both the front and back designs during template development.
Keep photographs, names, logos, titles, barcodes, QR codes, identification numbers, instructions, and other important information outside the slot opening and its surrounding safety area. Also account for the space that will be covered by the attachment hardware.
Review the complete badge with the slot placeholder visible before approving the design.
Critical warning: The slot placeholder is a design guide only. Hide or remove it before exporting the final background artwork. If it remains in the production file, the guide may print, and part of it may remain visible after the slot is punched.
Print and Laminate Before Slot-Punching
Badges should generally be printed and laminated before they are slot-punched.
A pre-punched card may have a burr, sharp edge, or irregular opening that can catch or damage a printer ribbon. Printing equipment, card-manufacturer instructions, and the approved production workflow must be reviewed before attempting to print a previously punched card.
Manufacturer guidance may specifically prohibit printing a card after it has been slot-punched. For example, HID advises users not to print onto slot-punched credentials and not to punch cards unless they are designed for it. Review the HID Credential Handling and Printing Guide and the current specifications for the exact card product being used.
The complete production sequence should be confirmed before processing the order:
- Print the badge.
- Apply the approved lamination when required.
- Slot-punch the finished badge in the approved location.
- Inspect and test the completed badge.
Improve Slot-Area Durability
Repeated pulling, twisting, bending, or use with a retractable badge reel can eventually cause a card to crack around the slot. The amount of stress depends on the card material, attachment method, usage frequency, environment, and finished construction.
Options that may improve slot-area durability include:
- Using 60% PVC/40% polyester composite card stock
- Laminating both the front and back
- Adding a compatible slot-reinforcement accessory
- Placing the badge in a protective holder
- Selecting an attachment that places less stress on the slot
- Replacing the direct slot attachment with a holder in demanding environments
Composite card stock generally provides greater flexibility and resistance to heat-related stress than 100% PVC card stock. Lamination adds surface protection and may further strengthen the finished badge.
These options can affect card cost, thickness, printer compatibility, lamination requirements, and production configuration. Confirm the complete construction before ordering card stock or approving production.
No card material or reinforcement makes a punched badge indestructible. Organizations should consider how frequently badges are used, how often reels are extended, and the conditions in which employees wear them.

Protect RFID and Technology Cards
RFID, proximity, contactless smart cards, and other technology cards may contain antennas, integrated circuits, and other embedded components. An incorrectly placed slot can permanently damage the card or prevent it from working with the intended reader system.
Before punching a technology card:
- Identify the exact card manufacturer and product number.
- Obtain the manufacturer’s current product specifications and antenna diagram.
- Confirm that the exact card model is designed to accept a slot punch.
- Identify the manufacturer-approved punch location.
- Follow printed lines, arrows, notches, or other designated punch markings.
- Confirm whether the card permits portrait punching, landscape punching, both orientations, or neither.
- Verify the orientation of every card before punching when placement depends on visible markings.
- Test the finished badge with the intended reader system.
Never infer the antenna or safe punch location from another card model. Cards that look identical may contain different antenna configurations, and manufacturers may revise internal construction.
A bright mobile-phone flashlight may help reveal an antenna in some cards, but it is only a secondary visual check. It does not replace the manufacturer’s current specifications, antenna diagram, or approved punch markings.
Critical warning: If an approved punch location cannot be verified, do not punch the card. Use a protective badge holder or another approved attachment method.
Produce and Test a Finished Sample
Before processing the complete batch, produce a representative badge using the actual:
- Card stock
- Frontside and backside design
- Printing method
- Ribbon and transfer film
- Lamination
- Slot-punch equipment and location
- Attachment hardware
Inspect the finished sample to confirm:
- Slot location and alignment
- Clearance around printed information
- Frontside and backside appearance
- Attachment compatibility
- How the badge hangs when worn
- Card strength around the slot
- Barcode or QR-code readability
- RFID or other technology performance
Testing an unprinted or unfinished blank card does not confirm the performance of the completed badge. Evaluate the entire finished construction before approving full production.
